How to choose the right HON chair
Check seat width first
Seat width determines how comfortably your hips rest. The HON Altern measures 28.8 inches wide, offering ample space for broader frames. If you prefer a snugger fit, the HON Volt sits at 26 inches. Measure your hips and ensure the seat is at least two inches wider than your body. This extra room prevents pressure points and allows for natural movement while you work. A wider seat distributes weight more evenly across the cushion, reducing fatigue during long hours at your desk.
Choose leather or mesh
Your choice of upholstery affects temperature and maintenance. Leather, found on the Volt and Sadie models, offers a professional look and is easy to wipe clean. However, it can retain heat. Mesh, like on the Crio, promotes airflow to keep you cool. Mesh is also more flexible, conforming to your shape. Consider your office environment. If your space gets warm, mesh is the practical choice. If you prefer a sleek, formal aesthetic, leather provides a polished finish that suits executive settings.
Verify adjustable arm support
Armrests support your forearms and reduce shoulder strain. The HON Crio includes adjustable arms, allowing you to position them at the correct height for your desk. Fixed arms, or no arms like on the Volt, limit this customization. If you type for hours, adjustable arms help maintain proper elbow alignment. Check if the arms move up and down or pivot. This feature ensures your wrists stay straight while typing. Proper arm support prevents upper back and neck tension by keeping your shoulders relaxed.
Assess back height needs
Back height determines how much of your spine is supported. The HON Crio features a high back, covering more of your torso for enhanced lumbar and upper back support. Lower backs may not support taller users adequately. If you are over six feet tall, a high-back chair ensures your shoulders and head have a place to rest. This support maintains proper posture by keeping your spine aligned. A shorter back might feel restrictive for taller individuals, causing you to slouch over time.
Consider chair weight and size
The physical weight of the chair indicates stability and ease of movement. The HON Volt weighs 23 pounds, making it the lightest option for easy repositioning. Heavier models like the Altern at 41 pounds offer a more solid, grounded feel. Check the overall dimensions, including length and height, to ensure it fits your desk space. A longer seat depth, like the Altern at 29.8 inches, suits taller users. Ensure the chair fits under your desk without hitting the sides or drawers.
